Bucks County Historic Living Room
A dated, carpeted Bucks County living room transformed into a richly layered, Architectural Digest–featured library — anchored by a restored stone fireplace, custom cherry built-ins, and a glowing antique pressed-tin ceiling.

The challenge
A historic Bucks County stone home had a living room that hid its character. Wall-to-wall carpet covered the original wide-plank floors, the handsome stone fireplace was soot-stained and dim, builder-grade painted built-ins overflowed with clutter, and a flat ceiling and beige walls left the room feeling dated and dark rather than rich and historic.
The vision
We turned the room into a warm, collected library worthy of the house. An antique-style pressed-copper tin ceiling crowns the space; custom cherry bookcases with cabinet bases frame a carefully restored stone fireplace; the wide-plank floors were brought back and layered with antique Persian rugs. Deep gray grasscloth, tailored window treatments, leather club chairs, a linen sectional, and a curated mix of fine art, antiques, and minerals complete a room that feels both serious and inviting.
The result
A handsome, livable library that honors its 18th-century stone bones while feeling fully alive today — ultimately featured in Architectural Digest as a study in layered, history-respecting design.
Drag to compare
The fireplace wall, head-on — same footprint, elevated with cherry millwork, restored stone, and a copper tin ceiling.
The room from the doorway — reimagined as a layered, art-filled library for living.
