Designing in Cape May

Interiors made for Cape May

Cape May is the crown of the Jersey Shore — a National Historic Landmark district of celebrated Victorian “painted ladies,” gracious seaside cottages, and second homes owned by families who care deeply about craftsmanship and provenance.

Our Cape May work balances coastal light with genuine refinement: book-matched stone baths, warm painted millwork, and kitchens and primary suites that feel breezy and collected rather than themed — timeless interiors made for a home by the sea.

Cape May Neighborhood Character

The architecture behind Cape May

The entire town of Cape May is a National Historic Landmark, and its concentration of well-preserved Victorian architecture — largely rebuilt after a devastating 1878 fire swept through the commercial district — is unmatched on the Eastern seaboard. The rebuilding produced the town’s famous “painted ladies”: Second Empire, Queen Anne, Gothic Revival, and Stick Style cottages with wraparound porches, decorative gingerbread trim, and steeply pitched roofs, many still standing along Columbia Avenue, Hughes Street, and Washington Street. The Emlen Physick Estate, an 1879 Stick Style house museum designed by Frank Furness for a young Philadelphia physician, remains the town’s architectural centerpiece and a benchmark for the ornamental detailing found throughout the district.

Beyond the landmark hotels and grand painted ladies, much of Cape May’s residential fabric is smaller-scale: shingle-clad seaside cottages, converted carriage houses, and rowhouse-style summer homes built for a Victorian tourist trade that made Cape May one of America’s first seashore resorts. Renovation work here has to answer to two things at once — the historic district’s expectations for exterior character, and the practical demands of salt air, humidity, and a home that’s often used seasonally. That combination is exactly why our Cape May interiors favor durable natural materials and a palette that reads as coastal without slipping into anything themed or nautical-cliche.

That combination is exactly why our Cape May interiors favor durable natural materials and a palette that reads as coastal without slipping into anything themed or nautical-cliche: book-matched stone that shrugs off humidity, painted millwork that can be refreshed without losing detail, and primary suites designed to catch the shore light rather than compete with it.

In Their Words
Nina Green is an extremely talented and detail oriented designer who has recreated over 7 rooms in our home. From project inception, we needed everything done. She assisted in the acquisition of contractors for hardwood floor refinishing, electricians, painters, etc. and worked with me on selection of furniture, area rugs, window treatments and accessories. We could not have achieved anywhere close to this result without her.

Questions

Cape May interior design FAQ

Do you design interiors for Cape May’s Victorian homes?

Yes. Cape May’s entire downtown is a National Historic Landmark district known for its Second Empire, Queen Anne, and Stick Style “painted ladies.” We design kitchens, baths, and full interiors for these homes that respect their historic exteriors while feeling genuinely livable inside.

What design style suits a Cape May seaside home?

We balance coastal light with real refinement in Cape May: book-matched stone baths, warm painted millwork, and interiors that feel breezy and collected rather than themed — built for a home by the sea, not a nautical stage set.

Can you renovate a historic cottage in the Cape May Historic District?

We can. Many Cape May homes, from grand painted ladies to smaller shingle-clad cottages, sit within the historic district, and we design renovations that respect exterior character requirements while modernizing kitchens and baths for how families actually use a seasonal home.
