Elegant Farmhouse Kitchen

Elegant Farmhouse Kitchen

A traditional elegant farmhouse kitchen featuring white inset cabinetry, quartzite countertops and mixed stone backsplash, finished with mixed metals of polished nickel & iron.

An 18th century stone farmhouse needed a serious upgrade from the “modernized” 1950’s kitchen.  NGD Interiors designed a kitchen that would have the modern conveniences of the 21st century while maintaining an elegant farmhouse feel.   First, during the design phase, the range was moved to create a dedicated cooking area featuring a professional stainless steel Wolf induction range and custom Vent A Hood in stainless steel with polished mirror accents.  Next, NGD Interiors removed the small shallow closet to create a dedicated wine & coffee bar featuring a SubZero dual zone undercounter wine refrigerator, superb for keeping whites perfectly chilled and reds at the perfect 68 degree room temperature.  The small pantry was extended into the kitchen to accommodate matching cabinetry and countertop, ideal for storing and using small countertop appliances.  A special feature, the stone wall, was discovered during demolition.  A mixture of reclaimed timber found in an old barn on the property and a reclaimed timber beam from a local antique lumber yard was used to create the unique wooden shelves, essential for storing pantry goodies.  For the island, we  rotated the new layout, allowing for a larger center island.  With the new orientation, we were able to add a small prep sink and  GE Advantium Oven directly across from our new cooking area. In addition, plenty of storage and dedicated stool seating was added, idyllic for guests to enjoy their wine and appetizers.  Lastly, both entrances into the kitchen and into the breakfast nook received special treatment by matching millwork found throughout original parts of the house, including using reclaimed materials and paneling from the existing closet area.

Using Nina Green Signature Series Cabinetry in an inset door style, special details such as radiused cabinet corners on the upper and lower cabinetry ends, extended inset end panels and even stile widths were painstakingly thought through.  The large professional Subzero refrigerator received beautiful custom paneling, as well as the nearby dishwahser, creating a simple yet elegant farmhouse feel.  Topping the cabinets is a beautiful gray and white leathered quartzite stone, a naturally occurring quartz, creating an understated yet prominent feature. The arabesque tile in mixed stone and handmade clay tile, completed with shimmery diamond grout, makes a showstopping statement.  Special elements such as the specialty cut radiator top above the sink in matching quartzite and the continuation of the backsplash tile into the window inset took careful consideration and craftsmanship.  Luxury plumbing finishes such as the large handmade Shaw sink and polished nickel Rohl bridge faucet was used on the main kitchen sink.  The front apron design of the fireclay sink features a pattern that coordinates with the cabinetry inset door. A Kohler cast iron sink with Kohler faucetry was used on the auxiliary sink & pot-filler.

A welcomed surprise during demolition included finding an original hardwood floor. After key repairs, the floor was refinished and stained, a stellar edition to the snowy white cabinetry.  Rustic wood accents were carried throughout the space on various light fixtures including the large island lighting, wall scones, and pantry light.  Mixing metals, we brought in iron, a common metal found throughout the stone farmhouse, and used it on the door & window hardware. We continued using iron through the various light fixtures found throughout the kitchen.

For the final stages of the elegant farmhouse remodel, we painted the original wide width beadboard, wainscoting, trim, windows & doors in a silver blue and finishing the wall areas with a beautiful (and cleanable) Phillip Jeffries wallpaper.  By focusing on the layout, much needed storage and cooking and prep area was added without adding any additional square footage to the kitchen while stellar accents make this truly an elegant farmhouse kitchen!
